Basic Networking commands in windows dos


Here is some basic DOS networking connections commands in windows system. Those commands are very useful for a networking engineer,system admin and also you who is interested about networking issue. Though those commands are very common and many of you may know it already but sometimes we can’t remember those simple command, that’s why I think of sharing of it with you guys.

* To see the system information: systeminfo
*  Display Connection Configuration: ipconfig /all
*  Display DNS Cache Info Configuration: ipconfig /displaydns
*  Clear DNS Cache: ipconfig /flushdns
*  Release All IP Address Connections: ipconfig /release
*  Renew All IP Address Connections: ipconfig /renew
*  Re-Register the DNS connections: ipconfig /registerdns
*  Change/Modify DHCP Class ID: ipconfig /setclassid
*  Network Connections: control netconnections
*  Test Connectivity: ping supto.net
*  Displays the TCP/IP protocol sessions: netstat
*  Display Local Route: route
*  Display Resolved MAC Addresses: arp
*  Display Name of Computer Currently on: hostname
*  Display DHCP Class Information: ipconfig /showclassid
*  Name Server Lookup: nslookup google.com
*  Access and maintain a Microsoft File/Printer Sharing environment: net
*  For Traces the route: tracert supto.net  (press ctrl+break to came out of this command)
*  Combines functions of Ping and Tracert : pathping /?
*  Used to retrieve the information about a user on a network: finger

There is one special IP number everyone should know about it:
127.0.0.1 – localhost (or loopback).
This is used to connect (through a browser, for example) to a Web server on your own computer. (127.0.0.1 is reserved for this purpose.) You can use this IP number at all times. It doesn’t matter if you’re connected to the Internet or not.
It is also called the loopback address because you can ping it and get returns even when you’re offline . If you don’t get any valid reply, then there’s a problem with your computer’s Network settings.
